In 1977 a huge dike (almost a mile square) filled with Barite mine tailings and left by the St. Joe Lead Co. burst and smothered approx. 30 miles of the Big River. Due to poor reporting and hysteria many people believed that the waste was toxic lead waste and the river would be forever polluted. It was really non-toxic Barite waste (mostly clay) that smothered the habitat, which has since recovered. The truth of the Big River is that the fishing is great, and floating (depending on where you go) is very good too.

Why the Big River?
You will avoid the crowds of many of Missouri's float rivers, while enjoying the relaxing natural surroundings of the Northern Ozarks.

A Class 1 river, the Big River is excellent for beginners and for children, as it is slow-moving, with little or no dangerous encounters.

Cherokee Landing's site on the Big River is centrally located with easy highway access and within an hour drive of St. Louis.
